The Joy of Provenance
We all know that by having a good understanding of the history of a piece; where it came from, who owned it, etc. improves its value, But for us, this knowledge makes what we do even more exciting and fulfilling. It can add romance, intrigue and quite often sadness to a piece. Here we have a picture of Sir Charles Edward Shaw MP, 1st Baronet along with his wife, pictured in 1906. This couple were the original owners of the Elkington and Co biscuit box we have on sale. The cartouches on the back and front carry his family insignia. A crest of five crossed arrows accompanied with the phrase 'nil desperandum' - 'never despair', written underneath. Let’s just say, this information certainly adds romance to what is already a delightful piece of history.
